Seine Musik erregte den Unwillen der sowjetischen Kulturfunktion\u00e4re wegen der nicht als systemkonform angesehenen modernen Komponierweise und wegen ihres religi\u00f6sen Gehalts. Er ging 1980 in den Westen. Er hat die \u00f6sterreichische Staatsb\u00fcrgerschaft.Von 1981 bis 2008 lebte er in Berlin &#8211; jetzt wieder in Estland nahe seinem Center.
